Why is there a quota application?
Although quota capacity changes in systems, quota application is available in all electronic mail systems. The storage allocated for users is constant as MB. Unless the quota application is applied, users who do not use their accounts for a long time or users who use their accounts as e-mail stores unconsciously, fill the general area in which the e-mails are found. As a result, the general posting system returns each mail coming to each user as their individual e-mail account is filled, all users take disadvantage of this situation and mail server is down.

The disk capacity of the server and the present and forecasted users are compared by system administrators and the optimum capacity for a person is determined.

Which e-mail software should I use?
"Outlook Express" is a software that is bundled Microsoft Operating Systems which is already present at computers of PC Users, furthermore, during the installation of Office programs "Microsoft Outlook" can also be installed which is a more advanced version. These two can be both used for e-mail.
Since Microsoft Products are licensed for our University, they need to be recommended. But both these two software are the direct targets of e-mail viruses and by infecting these software, viruses affect the systems and spread out. If you are using any of them, you must definitely use BU secure e-mail system. If you use another e-mail system then you must use an antivirus software with its latest update done and you must also be careful.
If you don't need to use the other components of these two software (such as Calendar, Communication, Tasks etc.), we recommend you another software named "Eudora" which can be used as a shareware and which is very hard to be infected.

What is SPAM?
In fact SPAM is a slang word that means "solicited commercial e-mail (UCE) or unsolicited bulk e-mail" Its explanation is e-mails that are received although it is not requested or being unable to prevent receiving them.

Why is there SPAM?
Generally SPAM is done because of commercial purposes and realized by the people who aim to win money or sell you something when you open the e-mail and click somewhere. Furthermore, unreasonable and nonsense SPAMs are also present created by ill-fated people.

Is our University be targeted by SPAM?
Yes, our University has a system that has thousands of e-mail accounts and is a favorite target of SPAM mails.

Does our university produce SPAM?
Yes, some users from our University send these kinds of e-mails stated above, especially at evenings or weekends, and make our University a SPAM creator zone.

Who can do what in SPAM subject?
It is very easy to fight against SPAMs in systems that have small number of accounts. Firstly, all e-mails are received by a single person and that person decides if that e-mail is a SPAM or not by scanning its content. But, in our University, approximately 2 e-mails are received in each second and in such a huge system it is practically impossible to realize this process by human power. Systems that make this process automatically are not preferred by our University since they can also eliminate some non-SPAM e-mails as they were SPAM mails. As a solution, Computer Center aims to prevent SPAMs which targets all users of the University. To realize this matter, some warnings are available but it cannot be prevented until the SPAM starts to spread among the system. Such a SPAM is stopped and cleaned when it is realized but some amount of distribution happens until it is noticed. Within the University, the determination of the e-mails which do not target the general but the individuals is impossible. You must stop these kinds of e-mails by automatic deletion or junk mail options of your e-mail software. In such a situation it is possible to interpret on what to do and not to do by thinking the Computer Center like "Post Office" and your account like your "Post Box".

What is a Computer Virus?
Computer Virus is a little software but it is oriented for a specific purpose. It goes into the computers without the permission of the user and acts for its own purpose.

What kinds of viruses are present?
Virus can be identified as a very broad concept. Formerly, virus software was very simple, today very-well developed different virus software attacks the computers worldwide. Generally, virus software can be classified as file viruses, operating system viruses, e-mail viruses, worms, Trojans and more various kinds.

How do viruses infect?
Types of virus infection;
Use of infected files,
Use of infected floppy,
Trying to start-up from a virused floppy disk left inside after switching-on
E-mail,
File sharing on local network.

What kind of harms viruses can cause?
Viruses cause different kinds of harms according to their type. For example, file viruses (differs to its type) infecting some certain files cause them to malfunction. Operating system viruses damage the operating system and this damage can reach up to the loss of all files found in computer. Trojans can cause the control of your computer by another person and transfer of your all data to outside. E-mail viruses infect e-mail software, copies many from itself and by using your system it sends infected e-mails to everybody which has address on your system from you and everybody which also has address on your system. It also can send your important files via e-mail.

What is a Trojan horse program?
A type of program that is often confused with viruses is a 'Trojan horse' program. This is not a virus, but simply a program (often harmful) that pretends to be something else.

For example, you might download what you think is a new game; but when you run it, it deletes files on your hard drive. Or the third time you start the game, the program E-mails your saved passwords to another person.

Note: Simply downloading a file to your computer won't activate a virus or Trojan horse; you have to execute the code in the file to trigger it. This could mean running a program file, or opening a Word/Excel document in a program (such as Word or Excel) that can execute any macros in the document.

What is a Worm?
Worms are described by some antivirus researchers as similar to viruses in that they make copies of themselves, but different in that they need not attach to particular files or sectors at all. Once such a worm is executed, it seeks other systems - rather than parts of systems - to infect, then copies its code to them in such a way as to have the code execute directly from memory. This form of 'classic worm' is still very rare, with the 'Morris worm' (or 'The Internet worm') of November 1988 the best known of a small number of examples. More recently the term 'worm' has been taken to mean 'a virus that replicates across a network link', with the most common usage applied to viruses that send many copies of themselves out attached to the infected user's e-mail.

What must be done in order to avoid viruses?
In order to be protected from viruses two software must be used simultaneously. First one is an antivirus software and protects your computer against viruses, it prevents the movement of these viruses among files and cleans them. Secondly, security software must be used. Some viruses aims to access your computer from outside and can enter your computer via network, your antivirus software can struggle with this but installing a security software and preventing all of them to access your computer would be much safer. Furthermore, by this software you can also prevent malicious people who want to access your computer.
